India’s Welfarian Diplomacy towards Turkey: Boon in Disguise
Global Politics is defined by constant interaction. This interaction is crafted either through union or disunion. However, the nature of interaction is not closely defined, in the sense that it alters in accordance to a country’s needs and interests. In other words, there is no permanent friend and no permanent enemy in diplomacy and global politics. These cases, in fact, for another time came to the fore in case of the earthquake-struck Turkey and the international, especially India’s response towards the country.
India has always tried to uphold its internal norms of cooperation and welfare in maintaining relations with other nations. Even though India often tries to project herself as an emerging great power, it never hesitated to withdraw from its responsible power status that it has been enjoying for decades now. Of late, India in her attempt to counter China, has been trying to bolster her outreach program worldwide. This outreach initiative of India can be considered as welfarian diplomacy as well. This welfarian gesture has been giving India enough dividends as many weaker nation states are now considering India to be a better partner than China. This proved in the case of Turkey as well. Few years ago, Turkey supported Pakistan in issues of Jammu & Kashmir and went on to criticize India on global platforms. But India’s outreach program in Turkey compelled the leadership of the country to release a statement; ‘India is friend in need and a friend in deed’. This welfarian gesture towards Turkey not only mend the gap between the two countries but provided India a leverage to isolate Pakistan more than ever before. Especially after Pakistan refused to provide air space to India’s aircraft carrying relief materials to Turkey.
