India, the G20 and Multilateralism in World Politics

Today, as India dons its coat to preside over G20 for the coming year, naysayers are of the opinion that this will not reign in the proverbial 'Acche Din' for the nation. And they are correct from one perspective. This would not mean that from tomorrow morning, all the internal tussles of our mammoth nation would be resolved. But international politics is all about the bigger picture.

With India and its Act East policy on a roll, the developing nations now have a significant say in how international politics is guided. India, being the representative of developing and emerging nations of the world, is now in a position to start the dialogue about the responsibility and accountability of the developed nations towards world peace and holistic development of the people. India's ascent to the G20 chair is to be followed by Brazil's presidency, allowing for the leaders of the developing nations to push for reforms in multilateral institutions to reflect contemporary realities. The developed countries, who may have been opposed to such an agenda, can now see that India is chairing a group of the world’s most important countries. This will make them realise that having India inside the tent will be more advantageous to them.

Moreover, India's goal will be to make these institutions better vehicles for achieving sustainable development and climate action. The G20 nations will look to find consensus on major challenges like a slowing global economy, a debt crisis that will impact almost 70 countries, millions around the world slipping back into poverty due to Covid-19 and the existential climate crises.

Thus, as India assumes the role of the representative of the eastern bloc of nations at G20, India will be serving as a bridge between the developed and developing world and shall be insulating the G20 from some of the divisive pressures that have paralysed multilateralism elsewhere.
